The prevalence of unlicensed limo operators has forced the Washington state Department of Licensing to issue a news release warning the public that before hiring a limousine or town car to celebrate a wedding or a prom, to make sure it's licensed and legitimate. They also said a simple advertisement in the phone book, or a newspaper ad, does not guarantee the operator is licensed. Unlicensed limousine operators are in violation of state law. While the advice is directed at US limo passengers, it is still important to remember.
"If you're planning to make your event extra special by using one of Washington's quality limo services, we suggest you do your homework," said Liz Luce, Director of the Department of Licensing. "Always check references and be sure the company is licensed." Limousine operators in Washington are required to be licensed, carry sufficient liability insurance, and undergo annual safety inspections by the Washington State Patrol. Chauffeurs must be at least 21 years of age, hold a valid drivers license, have completed a certified chauffeur training course and passed the test, and passed a State Patrol background check.
The need to licence a limousine and the business is no longer and option in the UK; from the 1st January 2008, all limousine operators will be legally bound to ensure that their limousines are licensed to operate for hire or reward. And, no limousine company can claim to have been denied the opportunity to ready themselves to take account of the new legislation, because the implementation has been delayed for close to 18 months
This means that they will have to apply for a Private Hire Licence for their business and limousines through their local authority if they are outside London or through the Public Carriage Office (PCO) if their business operates within the Greater London area. For the traveling public, they will be afforded the same protection that they benefit from when hiring a licensed minicab. Chauffeurs also undergo background checks and are required to obtain a Police clearance.
